While headline index moves looked relatively contained, the underlying picture was weaker: the Nasdaq posted its worst single-day performance in months, U.S. high-yield bond risk premiums climbed to a 17-month high, and yields on CCC-rated junk bonds rose to their highest level since 2020. Investors are now watching whether the market can absorb a wave of new debt supply tied to AI spending. A key trigger was Meta’s financing plan disclosed after its third-quarter results. Barclays said in an Oct. 23 research note that Meta moved early in part because other companies in the AI ecosystem had already launched or were preparing financing plans, reducing the market’s capacity to absorb new issuance. That dynamic points to a prisoner’s dilemma for AI giants: each company has an incentive to raise funds before others do, but if they all rush to issue debt, borrowing costs can rise for everyone. At the same time, hedge funds have been cutting leverage, and dispersion across AI-related credit assets has widened. Barclays estimates AI-linked credit totals about $680 billion, with spreads increasingly driven by issuer-specific funding needs, balance sheets, and long-term risk rather than a single broad AI theme.

Bitcoin treasury funding tightens as Strive nears 17% preferred yield and Strategy faces dilution pressure

U.S.-listed bitcoin treasury companies are running into a tougher funding market as traditional capital channels narrow and equity dilution becomes harder to ignore. A Bloomberg report published on Oct. 21 said firms including Strive and Strategy are leaning more heavily on high-dividend preferred stock to keep cash flowing for continued crypto accumulation. Strive said Tuesday that it completed a $630 million preferred stock sale, about 25% above its initial target. Based on that oversubscription rate, the original goal was roughly $504 million, implying an additional $126 million in demand. The preferred shares carry a 15% stated annual dividend and were sold at a discount, pushing the effective annualized yield for secondary-market investors close to 17%. Compared with the roughly 4.2% yield on one-year U.S. Treasuries, the spread is close to 1,300 basis points. Strategy is facing a different version of the same problem. Its 12% dividend STRC preferred stock has been stalled since its secondary-market price fell in June, and management is now seeking a daily dividend structure to restore liquidity. With preferred issuance under pressure, the company has continued to rely on at-the-market common stock sales to fund bitcoin purchases, leaving existing shareholders exposed to ongoing dilution.
